How business blogs can grow your business.
Firstly let me start by answering the question, what are business blogs and how can business blogs can grow your business? – Firstly, it is just a way of you sharing news, new products and services without making your site difficult for your customers to navigate.
Imagine for a second that you make lots of different things, and you have clients in loads of different business types. Now picture that you wanted to demonstrate your brilliance to all of those different people at the same time. Can you imagine how crazy your title structure would be? You’d have the longest list of headings and sub headings going.
When done properly, which is what I bang on about all the time…If you are new to my audience then I really do. Sorry, not sorry. You’ll see why soon. I digress, when done properly business blogs can act as a landing page for people to find you directly from their Google searches. And do you know what they will have searched? Not your company name (because they probably don’t know you exist). But they will have searched for what they are interested in learning about and ultimately buying.
How many business blogs can I have?
Yes, now you are talking my language. You SEE the power of having all these landing pages bringing warm leads into your business. Well here’s the thing, you can have as many as you want!
What you absolutely must remember though is don’t use the same keyword more than once. There’s no good writing a business blog and then writing another one with a very similar title to try and get two bites at the cherry. Google is a clever cookie as you may expect. Therefore, if you already have a blog with the same keyword and a very similar title, it will send them to that one if they are searching something very similar. In it’s genius way, if you have done both business blogs, it will get confused and not quite sure which to rank higher. Therefore penalising both blogs in its SERP (Search Engine Results Page for the less geeky amongst us).
How can I use them to grow my business?
You can use business blogs to grow your business in plenty of ways. If it isn’t on your radar as yet, you certainly want to consider adding it to your marketing plan very soon. Also, if you have loads of blogs on your site and they aren’t bringing you enquiries every day/week. It could be because you haven’t fully optimised them for search engines or they haven’t been written in the right way. I’ll talk more about that further down. If you paid someone to write them for you, that doesn’t mean they will have done these things. They don’t know your business in the same way you do. Also I’ve met my fair share of copywriters in my time who don’t do SEO.
So, you have various options when it comes to using business blogs to grow your business.
Sharing with your email subscribers
Sharing with your email subscribers to let them know what you are up to – it keeps you in their mind and why would you not want that. Even the most lax person when it comes to keeping in touch with their subscribers should consider this. Super easy to do as well because you have already done the work. You only need to copy and paste the intro onto your marketing email software and then add a ‘read more’ button with a link to the URL.
Sharing on your social media channels
Sharing on your social media channels – This obviously isn’t as easy on Facebook now they have started deleting all links (more on that later too). You can still write a small post (or copy the intro again), add a picture – the one in your blog will do or a screen shot of it. Include the link in the comments instead of the post if you want anyone to see it. Whilst it doesn’t take a lot of work you still don’t want to end up with it being deleted after all. You want people to see it.
Getting found on Google
The absolutely most important place you want your business blog to be seen though is Google *other search engines are also available. This is because people will only see it if they are searching what you have written about. As I said before, this means they are interested in it! They are the Holy Grail of internet users. The ones who out of the 65,000 Google searches a second are searching for what you are selling. This is what I teach people to attract for their websites.
Demonstrate your expertise
You can also use your blog to demonstrate your expertise. This can help you to get PR for your business. Often they will give you a backlink to your site. Backlinks are good for SEO and we want them so it is important to ask for links where possible, ideally not ‘no follow’ ones because Google doesn’t give you points for these. Points make prizes as we know from ‘Play Your Cards Right’ and our dear old Bruce Forsyth. Not that Google give points per se but you get the gist.
You are also demonstrating your expertise to all potential clients and customers who read your business blog. This could be the first time they have heard of you and your business. All blogs need to be a minimum of 300 words really and they go up from there. That means you have at least 300 words to demonstrate that you know your stuff.
Examples of business blogs to grow your business
Say you are a hypnotherapist and you would like to attract more clients who struggle with anxiety. Distance isn’t as important anymore as you like to treat people over Zoom where possible. ‘Hypnotherapist near me’ isn’t the search content you are trying to win. So you may write a blog titled – How to deal with anxiety when I hate my job/boss/life/parents… the list goes on. It needs optimising properly to make sure it comes up for that search by the way. I can help you with that if you are unsure how to go about it though.
Let’s assume you’ve optimised it though and you have written a great blog clearly showing you empathise, you seem like the ultimate authority on the subject and you offer a service that will help this person. You’ll have linked to that service too of course.
Tell me why that person has any reason at all to leave your page to look back at the search results again. They don’t. And that is the genius of using business blogs to build your business. They may follow your advice first, they may not realise they need your services quite yet because they work through their issue using your advice themselves first. But then they come back to you when they realise they want more help. You could, of course try to capture their email address whilst they are there the first time by using a offer/newsletter sign up or a free guide sign up too.
Further examples could be…
- Restaurant, offering a survival guide when eating out with small children. This would be great if they were child friendly and would clearly demonstrate it in their blog.
- Product business talking in great detail about one of their new products. This could be talking about the people they think it is useful for.
- Advice piece for a professional services business. You could write a detailed blog around what is going on with mortgage rates at the minute and how best to get approved for your upcoming mortgage application.
If you want to read some business blogs to get your creative juices flowing, this could be a good place to start
Can I go wrong with business blogs?
Not wrong, no, but it comes with a but – could you tell? I say this because you always have the options of sharing with your existing audience in your email list. You also may get a few new followers from social media if you share there. But the but is this, if you don’t optimise it properly to be found on Google you are doing a whole load of work for very little return. Plus you won’t get the long term gains!
What I mean by this is, Google will keep your post indexed, forever. Well, until you delete it anyway (DON’T DO THAT LIGHTLY, or at all). I have a manufacturing company, and I’ve been using blogging as a strategy for over 12 years. I get enquiries every day from blogs I’ve written for that business. And some of those were written 10-12 years ago. Never underestimate the power of Google and sharing your knowledge for your dream clients to find you. Even the big boys use Google when they need something. I’ve had Blue Chip companies find me from Google. Then you just need to keep them happy and they will keep coming back. For over 10 years in my case.
Main takeaway (not the food sort, sorry)
So the main takeaway here is if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. Optimize it to be found by Google and others. Then be patient. In the meantime you can be writing to attract other searches too. Whilst I’m talking about being patient, my record is 15 hours to Page 1. Although it could have been sooner because the result just said 15 hours ago. I nearly didn’t search it then as I thought it was too soon. So it’s lucky I know my record is 15 hours at all. I’m a pretty impatient person, well my family would say I don’t actually possess any patience at all. So if I can do it, so can you.
