Choose Success in Business – Lessons from a Corporate Escapee
Ever wondered what it really takes to make it in business? Grab a cuppa and settle in, because we’re about to dive into some eye-opening insights from someone who’s been there, done that, and probably got a really nice t-shirt to prove it.
Let me introduce you to Nicole Louise Winer. She’s a business mentor, coach, and strategist who’s been running her own show for six years. But before you start thinking, “Oh great, another business guru telling me to hustle 24/7,” let me stop you right there. Nicole’s approach is refreshingly different, and dare I say, a breath of fresh air in the often stuffy world of business advice.
From Climbing the Corporate Ladder to Jumping Ship
Nicole’s journey to business success didn’t start in a garage or a dorm room (sorry, Silicon Valley). She spent over a decade at HSBC, moving through departments faster than most of us change our socks. From retail to commercial, trade marketing to risk management, she’s seen it all. And let’s just say, she’s picked up a thing or two along the way.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Despite her successful corporate career, Nicole realised something was missing. It wasn’t just about the money or the fancy job title. She wanted more – more time, more freedom, and more impact.
So, what made Nicole take the leap from corporate comfort to entrepreneurial uncertainty? Well, it wasn’t just one thing (because life’s never that simple, is it?). There were three main factors:
- A change in location meant a different commute (and let’s face it, nobody likes spending more time on the tube than absolutely necessary).
- Her nan needed more care due to dementia, and Nicole wanted to be there for her.
- She’d seen first-hand the toll that running a business could take on family life, thanks to her parents’ experience in the catering industry.
But perhaps the most compelling reason was something Nicole had observed throughout her corporate career. No matter how high up the ladder people climbed, no matter how much money they made, they never seemed to have enough time. Time for family, time for health, time for, well, life.
And that, my friends, is where Nicole decided to make a change. She wanted to help people grow their businesses without sacrificing their lives in the process. Novel concept, right?
The Birth of a Business Mentor
Now, Nicole didn’t just wake up one day and decide, “Right, I’m going to be a business mentor!” (Although, wouldn’t that be nice?) Her journey started with a VA (Virtual Assistant) business, where she helped entrepreneurs grow their businesses while maintaining some semblance of work-life balance.
But here’s where it gets really interesting. Nicole found herself doing more than just VA work. She was coaching and mentoring her clients, offering strategic advice, and helping them overcome mindset blocks. And she was doing all this… for free. (I know, I can hear you gasping from here.)
Why? Well, partly because of that pesky thing called imposter syndrome (more on that later), and partly because she genuinely wanted to help. But eventually, Nicole realised that she was providing immense value beyond her VA services, and it was time to make a change.
Taking the Plunge into Full-Time Coaching
Transitioning from VA to full-time coach and mentor wasn’t easy. There was guilt (because apparently, we women haven’t cornered the market on that emotion yet), there were doubts, and there was fear. But Nicole made a choice – a choice to step into her true expertise and value.
She realised that by holding herself back, she wasn’t just limiting her own success, but also the potential impact she could have on others. And that, dear reader, is a crucial lesson in choosing success in business. Sometimes, the biggest obstacle to our success is ourselves.
Battling the Imposter Within
Now, let’s talk about that imposter syndrome I mentioned earlier. Even with years of psychology study under her belt and countless hours of practical experience, Nicole still struggled to call herself a coach. Sound familiar?
Here’s where Nicole’s approach to choose Success in business really shines. Instead of letting that doubt hold her back, she decided to look at the evidence. She wrote a personal CV, listing all the reasons she was already great at coaching and mentoring. And you know what? The evidence was overwhelming.
The lesson here? Sometimes, we need to be our own cheerleaders. We need to actively choose to see our own value and expertise, rather than waiting for someone else to validate us.
Stepping into the Spotlight (Even When It Feels Uncomfortable)
For many of us (especially us introverts), the idea of putting ourselves out there can feel about as appealing as a root canal. But Nicole learned that visibility is a crucial part of choosing success in business.
She realised that by staying hidden, she wasn’t just limiting her own growth, but also the number of people she could help. So, she made a choice – to be bolder and braver in sharing her expertise.
But here’s the kicker – she did it her way. As an introvert with ADHD, Nicole found ways to be visible that suited her personality and needs. And that’s another key lesson in choosing success: you don’t have to follow someone else’s playbook. You can write your own.
The Reality Check: Success Isn’t Always Pretty
Now, let’s bust a myth, shall we? Choosing success in business doesn’t mean everything’s suddenly sunshine and rainbows. Nicole’s candid about the challenges she’s faced, including a recent breakup that coincided with running a retreat for eight women. (Talk about timing, eh?)
But here’s where the rubber meets the road. Despite personal challenges, Nicole delivered what she describes as her best retreat yet. Why? Because she chose to show up, to push through, to deliver value even when it felt impossibly hard.
This is what choosing success really looks like. It’s not about waiting for perfect conditions or feeling 100% ready. It’s about making the choice to move forward, to deliver value, to help others, even when life throws a spanner in the works.
Practical Tips to Choose Success in Business
So, how can you start choosing success in your own business journey? Here are some practical tips inspired by Nicole’s experience:
- Get to know yourself: Understand your strengths, weaknesses, and unique quirks. Success looks different for everyone, so define what it means for you.
- Challenge those pesky limiting beliefs: Write your own personal CV of awesomeness. Look at the evidence of your expertise and capabilities.
- Be visible, but do it your way: Find ways to share your expertise that feel authentic to you. You don’t have to dance on TikTok if that’s not your jam.
- Never stop learning: Nicole invests in therapy, coaching, and mastermind groups. Keep growing and learning.
- Take care of yourself: Success isn’t sustainable if you’re burning out. Listen to your body, move regularly, and don’t forget to eat and hydrate (seriously, it’s amazing how often we forget these basics).
- Ask for help: You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- Share your experiences wisely: Be vulnerable, but make sure you’ve processed your experiences before sharing them publicly.
The Power to Choose Success in Business Journey
At the end of the day, success in business isn’t something that just happens to you. It’s something you choose, every single day. It’s in the small decisions – to keep going when things get tough, to ask for help when you need it, to celebrate your wins (no matter how small), and to learn from your setbacks.
Choosing success doesn’t mean you’ll never face challenges or setbacks. But it does mean you approach those challenges with a growth mindset, seeing them as opportunities to learn and improve rather than insurmountable obstacles.
Remember, you have more power than you think. You can choose to step into your expertise, to be visible in ways that feel authentic to you, to set boundaries that protect your wellbeing, and to define success on your own terms.
So, are you ready to choose success in your business? It might not always be easy, but as Nicole’s journey shows, it’s absolutely worth it. And who knows? Maybe one day you’ll be the one sharing your insights and inspiring others to choose success too.
